Converting gas-powered cars to electric

Larry Horsley's pickup has a set of neatly arranged electronics where his engine once was.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Larry Horsley loves that he doesn't buy much gas, even though he drives his '95 Chevy S-10 back and forth to work each day.

Horsley, a self-described do-it-yourselfer, simply plugs his truck into an electric wall outlet in his Douglasville, Georgia, garage and charges it overnight, instead of buying gasoline refined from mostly imported oil.

Electrifying cars Down Under

The alternative-energy automobile company known as Better Place plans to bring the same electric car system already in the works for Israel and Denmark to Australia. After raising $1 billion in capital—a tall order in today’s cold economic climate—Better Place founder Shai Agassi, a former software executive, Australian bank Macquarie and partners plan to build by 2012 electric car charge garages and battery exchange stations throughout Australia—all powered by wind turbines and other renewable resources (when possible)—to service the vehicles.

Company CEO Tom Purves says he'd like to build an electric version of the Phantom using pretty much the same technology BMW, which owns Rolls, is putting into the Mini EV it recently rolled out.

Plan to fit out Melbourne with electric car charging points

VICTORIANS will be able to drive an electric car and recharge it at plug-in points at home, the office or shopping centres within four years.

The mass use of electric cars moved a giant step closer to reality today, with power company AGL and finance group Macquarie Capital signing an agreement with international group Better Place to provide infrastructure to support the environmentally-friendly vehicles.
